Well Founded: A Wellness Retreat Curated for Founders of Color
Angie Franklin is a proud disruptor of the wellness industry status quo – a certified Vinyasa, Kemetic and Yin Yoga teacher who describes her work as intersecting where wellness and social justice meet. As the founder of Afro Yoga, Angie has not only established a thriving company but has also created a community and space where people of color can find support, healing, and connection. In our interview, Angie shared fond childhood memories and discussed her journey as a first-generation entrepreneur, with a special focus on her latest endeavor, the Well Founded retreat.
We joined Angie in Tulum, Mexico at the exquisite Ambre & Epices estate on the 5-day wellness retreat, which centers yoga, meditation, food, and above all, space for founders and entrepreneurs of color to connect with themselves and others. Knowing entrepreneurship can be a very lonely and sometimes overwhelming experience, Angie’s goal is to provide a safe space to unwind with likeminded people and remove the pressure to produce or perform, where founders can recharge, connect, and find balance amidst the demands of entrepreneurship.
The Well Founded retreat is a testament to her commitment to addressing the unique challenges faced by entrepreneurs of color.
Angie Franklin’s journey into yoga and entrepreneurship is rooted in her battle with depression and how yoga became a transformative tool for her healing. Yoga, for Angie, was not just about physical fitness, it became a powerful means of self-discovery and mental well-being and she found movement to be physically and spiritually healing.
Angie’s entrepreneurial spirit took flight when she recognized the need for a yoga space that catered specifically to people of color. This personal struggle laid the foundation for Afro Yoga’s emphasis on holistic wellness, mental health, and self-care within communities of color.
Angie shared her vision for the future of Afro Yoga and expressed a commitment to expanding the reach of Afro Yoga, both digitally and through physical spaces, ensuring that the benefits of yoga and wellness are accessible to individuals of all backgrounds. Angie envisions a world where Afro Yoga continues to be a beacon of empowerment, fostering a global community united by a shared commitment to well-being.
