Risky Dinner Conversations is Tackling HIV Stigma for Black Women

For many, conversations about sexual health remain hushed, buried under layers of stigma and misinformation. But for Koiya, silence is not an option, and she has developed platforms that address the complex issues surrounding sexual health.
Through a public health initiative, Risky Dinner Conversations, she has created an intentional and intimate space where Black women can engage in open, honest, and necessary discussions about sexual health, particularly HIV awareness and prevention; the event is in partnership with Gilead, the long standing leader in HIV prevention and treatment.
By bringing together local social influencers and other special guests, these private dinners curate candid discussions aimed at reducing stigma and promoting awareness about knowing one’s HIV status and prevention methods. And leading up to the event, guests excitedly received PR boxes that include things like a camcorder to document their experience.

Risky Dinner Conversations isn’t just about sharing a meal, it’s about sharing knowledge, experiences, and solutions. Koiya curates these gatherings with the goal of empowering Black women with information that can help them take control of their health. The dinner series provides a safe environment where guests can talk about their health without fear or shame. Risky Dinner Conversations ensures that Black women have a seat at the table—literally and figuratively.

Beyond the dinner table, Koiya takes these essential conversations to a broader audience through her podcast, Talk! with Koiya. The podcast serves as an extension of her mission, encouraging listeners to engage in candid discussions about sexual health.

Talk! with Koiya challenges societal taboos and encourages Black women to prioritize their wellness without shame. The podcast allows her to reach women who may not be able to attend a dinner, but still need the information, making these conversations more accessible.

The statistics are clear: Black women are disproportionately affected by HIV, yet many feel ill-equipped to talk about prevention and care. Koiya’s work aims to change that. Through Risky Dinner Conversations and Talk! with Koiya, she’s leading a cultural shift that normalizes discussions around sexual health.
By normalizing conversations about sexual health and HIV, Koiya has played a pivotal role in challenging misconceptions and empowering women to take control of their health. Her work serves as an inspiring model for others seeking to make a meaningful impact in their communities.
Koiya’s mission is only growing. She is determined to ensure that Black women everywhere feel empowered to advocate for their sexual health. By continuing to create safe spaces for these critical discussions, Koiya is making sure that no woman has to navigate her sexual health journey alone.
